First Week of Quarter 2 - Busy, Beautiful, and Refreshing!

Quarter Two began with teachers making final preparations for Parent-Teacher Conferences for Friday!  Our High School students enjoyed a wonderful trip with our Art teacher and HS Math teacher to the Trick Eye Art Museum in Seoul!  Grades 3 and 5, as well as High School Art students, were busy putting the final touches on their fantastic art pieces!  I had the privilege and joy to introduce our Kindergarten cherubs to Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie books!  Our Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Tina Cho, received notification that her newest book, Rice From Heaven, is now available for pre-order at Amazon with the book being available in August 2018!  Our Boys' and Girls' Volleyball teams ended their 2017 season high notes!! One of my prayer supporters sent a Matching Gift through a local credit union for the repairs for our leaking roof, or a new roof!  It totaled $1,000!  Friday's Parent-Teacher Conferences were well attended and I was able to get to speak with many parents!  Saturday morning, our church Exciting Dae Kwang, had our monthly Men's Prayer Breakfast - always a great time!  Yes, it was a very full week of busy, beautiful, and refreshing events!

I will try to share the week with photos and not write as much!  Please do not hesitate to write and ask me any questions you may have.  I always enjoy hearing from you!

Unfortunately, I was not able to get any photos from the HS Field Trip to the Trick Eye Art Museum on Monday. :-(  I will see if I can get some from our Art teacher, Ms. Lee, for a later post.  I do have some photos of the excellent artwork our students are doing with our awesome Art teacher, Ms. Lee.  So I will share some of their creations here:

Grade 5 students have been studying the art of Mary Cassatt - especially her unique portraits.  I think the students have done an outstanding job.  Ms. Lee is amazing at inspiring the creativity of our students.  Enjoy some of the 5th grade students Mary Cassatt Portraits:

Our High School art students have been studying Korean Art History and what traditional Korean painting is.  The picture below is a sample of some of the work our HS students have created.  This was on display in the lobby as parents came to Parent-Teacher conferences on Friday. So many of the parents and teachers want to purchase many of these pieces!

On Wednesday, our Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Cho, invited me to come to Kindergarten to introduce her cherubs to Mo Willems.  I shared some of my favorite books and read one of the Elephant and Piggie stories.  There are 25 total books in this series and I told the cherubs that I have all of them and they can borrow them anytime!  I also told the students that Mrs. Cho's newest book will be available in August of 2018.  I am going to post a little preview of the book here and if you would like to pre-order a copy, you can go online to Amazon and put your order in to receive it as soon as it is published.

The cover of Mrs. Cho's newest book.  Below is a little synopsis of the book for you copied from the Amazon website.

"Rice from Heaven is a true story about compassion and bravery as a young girl and her community in South Korea help deliver rice via balloons to the starving and oppressed people in North Korea.

'We reach a place where mountains become a wall. A wall so high, no one dares to climb. Beyond that wall and across the sea live children just like me, except they do not have food to eat.'

Yoori lives in South Korea and doesn’t know what North Korea is like, but her father (Appa) does. Appa grew up in North Korea, where he did not have enough food to eat. Starving, he fled to South Korea in search of a better life. Yoori doesn’t know how she can help as she’s only a little "grain of rice" herself, but Appa tells her that they can secretly help the starving people by sending special balloons that carry rice over the border.

Villagers glare and grumble, and children protest feeding the enemy, but Yoori doesn’t back down. She has to help. People right over the border don’t have food. No rice, and no green fields.

With renewed spirit, volunteers gather in groups, fill the balloons with air, and tie the Styrofoam containers filled with rice to the tails of the balloons. With a little push, the balloons soar up and over the border, carrying rice in the darkness of the night over to North Korea."

On Friday, it was a pleasure to have many of our parents come to the school for Parent-Teacher conferences from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  We had a wonderful attendance and it was so good to get to speak with many of the parents.  We also had a half day on Thursday for students in order to give teachers an opportunity to make final preparations for the conferences.  They were all so well-prepared!  I was so proud of them.  Our cafeteria staff prepared lunch on Thursday and Friday for the staff so they would not need to worry about going out for a lunch.  In addition to excellent conferences, we enjoyed some excellent fellowship during these two lunches.  Also on Friday, our excellent Member Care Team provided some extremely delicious treats for snacks during the day. One member even brought me a bag of the new Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses!  Yes, you heard correctly!  It seems like everything around this time of year is pumpkin spice! :-)

ICS-P concluded the week with our Boys' Volleyball team traveling to Seoul to participate in our Conference Volleyball Tournament to conclude their season.  The boys had already earned first place for the Conference and were hoping to win the tournament as well.  I so wanted to be at the tournament to cheer them on but because of Parent-Teacher conferences, I could not. :-(  They fought diligently and lost in the championship game after some very close games in the final match.  I am still very proud of them as they finished first in the Conference and a close second at the tournament.

Saturday was the volleyball tournament for the girls' teams in our division.  Out ICS-P girls had already won the division and were also counting on coming away winners at the tournament - especially since ICS-P was hosting the tournament.  The girls were the first seed and played at 12 Noon and won moving them on to the championship match.  What an amazing match it was!  The girls had some close moments but NEVER gave up and ended up winning the Championship - a first in a long time for ICS-P!  Our second-grade teacher, Ms. Alexi Dather, is the coach and was assisted by our third-grade teacher, Ms. Janet Colgain.  What also impressed me on Saturday was that all of our Boys' Volleyball team was at both matches for our girls cheering and encouraging wildly throughout both matches!  I loved seeing them support the ladies! It was a great weekend!  Enjoy a few pictures of our ladies in action!  You could check out the video clip on Facebook of the girls after winning the fourth and final game of the Championship Game!  They were sooo thrilled!

Here they are with their First Place Tournament plaque!

Another photo with most of them being a little silly! :-)

"He has made EVERYTHING beautiful in its time!"

Yes, He has made everything beautiful in its time!  That is from Ecclesiastes 3:11!  At the beginning of that chapter, my Bible has the heading: "A Time for Everything."  As I reflect on this past week at ICS-Pyeongtaek, this has been very evident.  Ecclesiastes 3:1 reads as follows: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens."  Verse four in the same passage really grabbed hold of me this past week.  It reads, "a time to weep and a time to laugh (filled with joy), a time to mourn and a time to dance."

Monday was a Cyber Day for ICS-P students and a Professional Development Day for ICS-P teachers and administrators.  Students had assignments online from their teachers and worked via technology from home or wherever they desired.  Teachers came to school and immensely enjoyed an excellent workshop from Kagan Korea on Cooperative Learning.  The workshop leader was Mr. Chris Lowe who used fantastic techniques with all of us to realize the big differences between "Group Work" and "Cooperative Learning."  Teachers were active and engaged and were filled with a lot of joy and excitement as they received a lot of great stuff about brain research and how children AND adults learn!  It was a time of happy and joyful learning for our staff.  During the days following the day-long workshop I witnessed many of our teachers already implementing some of the great techniques into their teaching!  I was very impressed that even our high school teachers had begun to implement the ideas into their teaching!  Mr. Mooney, who not only is our Academic Principal but also teaches one class to high school students on Worldview, had rearranged his lesson plans to implement a RallyCoach type of cooperative learning.  Mr. Mooney successfully tried out a variation of RallyCoach (Round Coach?) with his worldview class. Two teams were given identical stacks of hexagons with people, concepts, or ideas written on them. They had to place them in a web and explain the connection with every adjacent piece to the rest of the team. They enjoyed it and had great conversations about the content!

 Mr. Mooney's Worldview class involved in a cooperative learning
lesson.  It was great to see them thinking and hear them interacting
                                        with one another.

A picture of another group in the Worldview class this past week!

 I wish we could have remembered videotape tape the interactions
                              with this learning activity!

Another group of hexagons; wish you could hear the interaction!

And one more group's hexagon activity!

We have been praying for our sister school in South Korea, ICS-Uijeongbu, concerning the decision as to whether or not it would stay open after this current year or if it would need to close. During this past week after many discussions and much prayer, all of us in the Network of International Christian Schools received the news of the closing from our Founder and President, Dr. Joe Hale.  Instead of me writing a lot about the closing, I am going to give you a link which you can click on and it will take you to the NICS news article on their website.  It will give you details and items to pray for during this time of mourning as well as celebration for what the Lord has done through the teachers and students at ICS-Uijeongbu. The link is below.  (If it does not allow you to go to the page t is linked to for some reason, please type in the url address in your web browser (or copy and paste it into the browser) to view Dr. Hale's article about the closing.)

I have some exciting news that the Art Class wanted to share with you! In August, Elementary students participated in an Art Contest hosted by Korean Air Lines. Over 600 elementary students from international schools throughout Korea participated in the contest!  Korean Air chose only 50 students to receive awards and recognition!
On Friday, our Art Teacher, Ms. Kathy Lee informed me that Cyrus, one of our students in 3rd grade was selected to win an award!!! He is not in the top three places but we are still so happy and proud that one of our ICS-Pyeongtaek students was selected for this special recognition and award for his artwork!!
The picture below is not for the contest, but this young man, Cyrus, was also selected as one of our Golden Ticket students recently for demonstrating excellent character! We are all very proud of this young man!

Here I am with Cyrus during a Friday afternoon Golden Ticket celebration!

As many of you know, I really enjoy the beauty that God shares with us through sunrises and sunsets. This past Thursday, following our Thursday afternoon Professional Development session, I left school and went to pick up some dry cleaning and get some groceries.  As I started driving back to my apartment, I saw the sun setting in the western sky!  I was hoping that at the one bridge I cross to get home the traffic light would be red when I got there.  Sure enough!  It was!  I quickly opened the car window and captured this picture on my cell phone.  I am still amazed at the quality of pictures on cell phones these days.  It was another reminder that there is a time for everything and that "He has made everything beautiful in its time!" (Ecc. 3:11)

Sunset after a cool rainy day near ICS-Pyeongtaek!  If I would get out of my car and walk to the school from the bridge, it would probably take 5-7 minutes.

I want to leave you with another beautiful piece from our Art teacher at ICS-P.  I am not sure if Ms. Lee wrote this or not, but it is her artwork.  I want to be able to make this my declaration every day.

Thank you, as always, for your faithful love, care, encouragement, emails, regular mail, prayers, and gifts.  This next week is our final week of Quarter One.  Please pray for our teachers as they prepare grade reports and get ready for Parent-teacher Conferences on October 27.  It will be a busy couple of weeks.  Thanks for praying.  I would especially ask your prayers as I need to make a couple important decisions this week.  Thank you.  Please enjoy a great week!  Our weather here in Pyeongtaek is getting cooler.  I love this cool, yet not cold, weather! :-)

Refreshment Week with an Update on Some Young Men!

This will be a short post this week since you just received one from me on Tuesday.  Upon my return from Tongyeong with Yeongmin and WookJae on Monday night, I was able to enjoy some reading, some reflection, and some relaxation...and a tiny bit of work at school. :-)  It was great to be able to do some brisk walking this past week, too.  I am hoping that I will be able to keep that going on a more regular basis.

I would like to give you an update on three young men, who many of you have been praying for.  One of the young men, Chris Haynes, is studying at Appalachian Bible College in West Virginia.  We are in contact with each other at least weekly and sometimes even more.  This week he asked me to pray for him right now as he is struggling with various issues in his life.  He is going through a time of laziness - as he calls it.  His health is good, but he is tired and still struggling with some pain in his back.  Chris did tell me that his speech that he was really worried about went very well.  As you think of Chris, I would ask you to pray for him and his studies and his "laziness" at the moment.  He is also struggling to build effective relationships.  I know he would value your prayers.

The second young man has been a dear friend since I met him at SYME back when I first came to Korea.  You knew him first as Jamie; his Korean name is JiSang Hwang.  JiSang is quite a thinker and when we get together, we love to reflect with each other out loud.  It is always a stimulating time of conversation as well as just some good old joyful laughter together.  On Saturday, I was able to meet up with JiSang in Seoul and what a fantastic time we had together.  We enjoyed a very delicious meal at the  Mad for Garlic restaurant.  That was followed by some coffee and tea at Starbucks before I needed to return to Pyeongtaek.  JiSang has always been a thinker and he continues to seek the Lord's direction for his future.  He has such a kind, caring, and loving heart and loves to build relationships, but is not sure if he is to stay working in the company where he is now or move to another area of ministry.  Thank you for praying with me for my dear friend, JiSang!

GGG and JiSang preparing to enjoy a very delicious lunch at Mad for Garlic!

JiSang placed his sunglasses on the table and picked them up and put them on.  JiSang loved it and snapped this picture quickly! :-)

We both enjoyed "Garlic Snowy Pizza"!
It is a great combo of shrimp, pineapple,
and garlic!  I added cheese to mine, but
 JiSang does not eat cheese and did not
               want any on his! :-)

We both enjoyed this delicious Garlic
Ribeye Steak!!  Oh, soooooo good!!
_________________________________________________________

After JiSang and I said our farewells for this time, I took the bus from Seoul to Pyeongtaek to meet up with the third young man many of you have been praying for.  His name is Tommy and he has really been struggling lately.  When he texted me and asked if I could meet him for dinner on Saturday evening, I was delighted!  We got together at the AK Plaza and enjoyed an excellent conversation.  Tommy is beginning to really trust me and says that he can tell me anything because I just love him and never judge him.  Tommy is married and they have a five-year old daughter who has captured Tommy's heart.  Tommy wants to get his degree and says that he wants to mature, especially in his relationship with his wife.  When he had to leave to pick up his daughter on Saturday evening, he told me that he wants to meet more regularly with me so that I can hold him accountable. I hope you will join me in praying for Tommy.  Pray that our times together will prove to be encouraging and helpful to Tommy, who really wants to serve the Lord and be a better husband.

GGG and Tommy at the Food Court at Pyeongtaek Station.  Tommy enjoyed the Japanese Cold Noodles (I sampled them and they were good).  I had one of my favorite Korean foods, Chamchi Kimbap.  Chamchi is Tuna.  I love it!!

That's it for this week.  Oh, you can pray for our teachers and administrators as we will be having an all-day Professional Development workshop tomorrow, Monday.  Students will have a Cyber Day and not come to school.  (A Cyber Day for us is when teachers assign work for their classes online and students complete the work at home via technology.)  All students and teachers return to school on Tuesday.

Thank you, as always, for continuing to be so faithful with your love, care, encouragement, emails, regular mail, prayers, and gifts!  I trust that you are enjoying some cool weather where you are and enjoying the month of October.

Love,
Gregg

A Great Finish AND a Refreshing Respite!!

The above photo was taken by Mylene Haselman, the CFO at ICS-Pyeongtaek near her home in Pyeongtaek at the beginning of last week!  I love sunsets and sunrises and this was a great reminder of the beauty that God displays each and every day.  It was a wonderful to begin the final week of September at ICS-P! It was especially good since I had to take a sick day on Monday of last week because of a sore throat. I stayed home and rested, read, and reflected on His love for me and how I need to display that love daily in a world that is full of hate these days.

Tuesday began a busy week with which to end September!  (Can't believe it's October already!) The day was filled with quite a few meetings - all were profitable.  Students were finishing MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Testing sessions.  MS and HS enjoyed Chapel times.  And one of our new teachers, Mrs. Dale Amos, became 50 years old!  Her husband wanted to give her a surprise 50th birthday party after school with all of our staff!  It was a bit difficult to keep it a surprise from Dale, but we all did it!  After students had departed for the day, the teachers' lounge was set up with decorations and all kinds of yummy food that Mr. Amos had brought from the Osan AFB.  He is retired from the military and has been volunteering with several projects at ICS-P along with one of their sons, Quincy, who is living with them for a little while.  Everyone had a great time of fellowship and Dale was wonderfully surprised!

We are so happy to have this family at ICS-P!  Left to right: Mr. Joe Amos, Quincy Amos, and the birthday girl, Mrs. Dale Amos!

On Wednesday, our School Principal, Mr. Charlie Mooney, our CFO, Mrs. Haselman, and I traveled to the Osan Air Force Base for the first ever Joint Employment and Resource Fair.  Camp Humphreys and Osan AFB went together to sponsor this fair and we had numerous persons stop by our table to find out about substitute teaching possibilities as well as full-time teaching position possibilities.  Some even stopped by to ask about admissions at ICS-P.  It was a great time and I hope you will pray that some of the contacts will bring good results for ICS-P!

Thursday was another special day for me in Elementary School Chapel.  I have received official word from Walk Thru the Bible that I can conduct the Walk Thru the Bible Kids' Seminar in our ES Chapels this year.  The children are enjoying it very much and we continue to hear of children deciding to accept the Lord.  After talking with the Dean of Faculty at Walk Thru the Bible, he is going to send me enough Kids' Walk Thru Workbooks and some adult resources books for teachers. Please pray as I continue to lead these sessions almost every week with our ES cherubs.

Our teacher of Grade 2, Ms. Dather, shared a little assignment she had been doing with her children on Wednesday evening and I shared some of these with our staff and then with the ES Chapel students.  I am going to type some of the responses to the project here.  I am going to type them with the spelling that the children had on their papers. :-) So please know that I have not completely forgotten how to spell. :-)  I just wanted you to see some of what our little ones are learning through their teachers and the Chapel times.  Ms. Dather's writing project was simply to finish the following prompt into a sentence. Some children had written up to 10 sentences as they finished this prompt: God is...  Here is a sampling of the children's responses:

God is...

*   slow to anger.
*   unstopable.
*   the father of us.
*   amazing!
*   marvelous!
*   over the moon!  (This is in one of the songs we sing and dance to in ES Chapel.)
*   the King above all false god.
*   has a clean heart.
*   the fruit of the spirit.
*   the Holy Spirit.
*   my Super Harro!
*   my best friend.
*   powerful!
*   a leader.
*   Jeses!
*   a Saveyer.
*   love, joy, peace, patints, kindness, geniness, and self control.
*   creator.
*   always good.
*   the king of all gods.
*   smart and clever.
*   the king more powerful.
*   my Lord and your Lord to.
*   the everyday king.
*   the champyon of champyons!

On Friday at ICS-P, we celebrated the holiday in Korea known as Chuseok.  It is a harvest festival in Korea and many refer to it as "Korean Thanksgiving."  It is very family-oriented and is one of the busiest travel times in South Korea.  At ICS-P, we encouraged elementary children and teachers to dress in Hanboks or Taekwondo outfits or Korean Sports' teams.  It was a fun day and got everyone in the mood for the week off this week.  Enjoy some of the photos from the day!

I had one other very special treat and surprise on Friday!  Ms. Dather brought her Grade 2 class to my office in the afternoon to bring some of the applesauce they made for Chuseok!  It was soooo tasty!  I told them that my mother would have been so proud of them.  It reminded me so much of her applesauce!  They were sooo excited to be able to come and share what they had made in their class!

Here is Ms. Dather's Grade 2 class in my office on Friday treating me to some of their homemade applesauce!  What a beautiful surprise!

I went home Friday evening to make final preparations for my message at the Dae Kwang Church's Mens' Prayer Breakfast on Saturday morning and to pack for my three day trip with my dear friend and former SYME student, Yeongmin.  He had invited me to go with him and his Middle School friend, WookJae Lee, to Tongyeong, a beautiful city at the very south of South Korea - below Busan even.  We had a great time together!  We did a lot of walking up and down the hills of Tongyeong. We enjoyed some great fellowship and conversations!  We enjoyed a beautiful resort, Club - ES! Through a friend, Yeongmin was able to secure a reservation here.  You can't get one unless you know someone who is already a member.  It was a gorgeous resort in the hills overlooking one of the many inlets surrounding the hills of Tongyeong.  Oh, yes...we ate some very delicious food as well! :-) I was happy to meet WookJae.  He was a bit nervous because of his English.  I thought his English was fine and we enjoyed some good conversations.  I hope you will continue to pray for both of these young men.  I want so much for both of them to come to know Jesus Christ!  Here are some photos from our weekend.  I have posted more on Facebook, but am putting a few here.

Some have asked already where Tongyeong is located.  Here is a map showing its location at the very southern tip of South Korea.  Pyeongtaek (not shown on this portion of the map) is north of Daegu.  I met Yeongmin and WookJae at the Express Bus terminal in the south of Seoul for a four-hour journey to Tongyeong!  It is a great place!

The next five photos are views of some of the beautiful city of Tongyeong!  It only gives a little of the flavor of the area.  You really have to experience it!

The next pictures show some of the delightful places we were able to explore and enjoy while in Tongyeong!  Lots of great food and so many hills - great for walking!  It was a special weekend!

I opened this post with a photo of a gorgeous sunset in Pyeongtaek.  I want to close this post with another sunset photo.  This one is from our weekend trip to Tongyeong.  It was actually the sunset that was taking shape as we arrived at Club-ES.  I was happy to get there in time to capture a couple photos of the beautiful sunset!  As we begin the month of October, Perhaps it will remind you to take some time to just sit and reflect on all that God has given us and done for us!

As always, thank you so much for continuing to be so faithful with your love, care, encouragement, emails, regular mail, prayers, and gifts!  I trust you will enjoy a fantastic and beautiful October!

Love, Gregg
